The best performing sector was BSE Healthcare, which rose around 1.50% amid losses in the main indices. The advance-decline ratio remained in favor of advances with 1,740 scrips advancing and 1,562 scrips declining on the BSE. Broader markets outperformed the major indices. In such a sluggish market, shares of IOL Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals rallied over 12% and attracted investors as top BSE Smallcap gainer.
At 11:30 am, the BSE Sensex fell by 0.17% to reach a level of 61,598. The Nifty-50 index fell 0.13% to the level of 18,362. HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries were the top gainers on the Sensex. While ITC Limited, HDFC and Maruti Suzuki declined.
The rupee depreciated against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) sold foreign currency worth USD 922 million in October when the rupee had hit a very low level.
